Silicolgel is one of the UKs leading gastrointestinal products. Sold in Boots, Holland & Barrett, , Superdrug, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Independent Pharmacy and Health Stores the brand grew +51% in 2019 (IRI yr/yr sales to Apr 2019).
Silicolgel’s unique mode of action is due to the key ingredient silicic acid which forms a protective and soothing coating over the lining of the stomach and intestines. Irritants and toxins are bound onto the gel layer and then passed naturally out of the body.
Class IIa Medical Device for treatment of Gastrointestinal Disorders
How It Works
Its therapeutic action is due to the large and reactive surface of colloidal silicic acid and its ability to act as an adsorbent. After silicol®gel is swallowed, it forms a protective and soothing coating over the lining of the stomach and intestines. Due to the adsorptive and binding qualities of colloidal silicic acid, it physically attracts and adsorbs irritants, toxins and pathogens.
This renders them harmless so that they can be removed naturally through the intestines and out of the body. Silicic acid can also bind gases and reduce excess acidity.
The role of silicic acid in the treatment of gastrointestinal conditions is widely reported. The effectiveness of orally taken silicic acid for the treatment of GI diseases is based upon its high adsorptive capacity. This is reported by Schmidt (1998) and its highly adsorptive capacities and physical mode of action are described by Jurkic et al (2013) and Evonik (2015). Wagner (1982) and others describe the high adsorptive capacity of silicic acid in physically binding with toxins of all relevant molecular sizes as well as with high molecular proteins, bacteria, viruses and toxins.
